JUNIOR S C.M. The Junior S.C.M. has continued to meet weekly in the dinner hour. Members have given talks on various passages from the Bible and lives of the early translators. The programme has also included Quizzes and filmstrips, and in the Spring term, a shortened version of the life of Hudson Taylor, the founder of the China Inland Mission, was read as a serial story. In the Autumn term, Miss Newton told us about her visit to Zululand and showed us some very interesting slides and articles she had brought back. A few scrap books, cot blankets and pullovers have been made and sent to the hospital there. At Christmas we visited an old ladies' home to sing carols and we took them presents. New members from 1st, 2nd and 3rd forms are always welcome- THE SCIENCE SOCIETY The new committee for this year elected at the Annual General Meeting in the Autumn consisted of: D. A. Bender, (Secretary), P. H. West, (Treasurer), D. Page and K. Emerson. The Members of the Science Staff are also committee members. There were three papers presented to the Society in the Autumn Term by: Miss Rogers, Mr. Gardiner and P. H- West. Alternately with these meetings were meetings at which industrial films of Scientific interest were shown. These were not always as interesting as could have been hoped, and many were little more than ill-disguised advertising matter. There were no meetings in the Spring Term, and at the time of going to press there had been only one meeting in the Summer Term; that addressed by E. A. Drawneek. More meetings for the latter part of the term were planned The scheme for sale of 'New Scientist' and 'Discovery' magazines at a reduced rate through a group subscription scheme continues to be ably organised by the Treasurer, P. H. West, and well supported throughout the School. Meetings are moderately well attended, but it would be pleasing to see more members of the Science Sixth coming forward to offer to present papers, instead of the present need for strong coercion from members of committee and Staff. D.A.B. THE CHESS CLUB The Chess Club has had a good year financially, thanks to an increase in the attendance charge, and four new sets and boards have been bought. Attendance was good early in the year, but it fell off badly in the spring term. Although we have played no 14 matches, the School Competition took place, and was won by Robinault of 5C. We look forward to the new season with hopes of increased membership and more inter-school matches. D.Page. MARINE BIOLOGY TRIP (Budleigh Salterton, Easter, 1964) On the shores of Otter River, By the shining big sea water, Stood the gumboots of our leader, Leader of the party, Gardiner. Right around them rose the water, Rose the dark and muddy water, Water of the flooding Otter. Red before him rose the cliff face, Rose the green-bespeckled cliff face, Cliff face Bryophyta covered. Strode he bravely through the water, Water of the flooding Otter; Water cold and rushing was it, Took he out his precious camera, Camera of the one lens reflex, Snapped he all the Bryophyta. Water entered not his gumboots, Gumboots full of strength and supple, Gumboots longer than the others. Those which mighty Otter entered, Ran the water round their great toes, Squelching on the long way homewards, Squelching to the Hotel Southlands, Hotel on Parade Marine-On the morrow went we forward, Went we forward in our autos, Forward to the Beach of Ladram. There upon the rocks we found them, 'Neath the seawrack there we found them, Found we hordes of Annelida. In our strainers (tea) we caught them. Caught the Bristly Polychaeta, Put them into bags of plastic. Wet and weary went we westward, Westward to the town of Budleigh Where stood back Griselda's Guide Hut Stood that guide hut in that town Full of space and ample was it Now laboratory of renown And the place for tea and biscuits Made for us by Mrs. G. 15
